Dancing With God

It was an enchanting, sweet wedding. The bride was beautiful. The groom handsome. The ceremony honored God and expressed the couple’s love very lovingly. The reception was full of celebration. There was dancing and laughing and loving.

And at one point in the midst of the celebrating, my just-turned-16-year-old son asked me to dance. I thought I had misunderstood. First, because you would not think in a million years that you’d find this child on the dance floor. Second, because I’m his mom. And he’s a teenage boy.

I was thrilled. I would have danced the cha-cha with him if he’d wanted (even though I don’t know how to do the cha-cha) just because he wanted to dance with me.

As we walked onto the dance floor to the beginning strains of a sweet, slower song, he said, “I don’t know how to do this, you know.” And I said, “That’s ok. I’ll show you.” And I was so honored to spend that time with him. And so proud of him. And I felt extra loved by him.

Later that night, I thought about how it made me feel to have his sweet attention like that in the midst of all that was going on around him. He was hanging with his friends and his brother’s college friends and dancing the night away for the first time in his life. And yet, in the midst of his celebrating and his “coolness” he stopped. And he asked his mom to dance with him.

And I wondered how often God feels that way about me. When I stop from my busyness. When I pull away from the crowds. When I seek Him in solitude. When I give Him my full attention. When I ask Him to dance.

He is our heavenly Father and we are His children. He tells us over and over again how much we matter to Him*:

So on any given day, with a song in my heart and the music of the ages in my soul, may I remember to stop for a moment and simply ask, “Father God, may I have this dance?”

  2. Precious! Precious! What a wonderful son!
Thank you so much for this…

What a wonderful list of verses….my favorite love letter is from Isaiah 43…..

I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
…. you are precious and honored in my sight,
    and because I love you,
I will give people in exchange for you,
nations in exchange for your life.
    Do not be afraid, for I am with you;
I will bring your children from the east
and gather you from the west.
I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’
and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’
    Bring my sons from afar
and my daughters from the ends of the earth—
everyone who is called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,
    whom I formed and made.”

    Have a wonderful day, Debbie!
    Much Love,
